Whooping Cough Case at School

29 November 2024

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Whooping Cough Case at School

We are writing to inform you that the South East Public Health Unit (SEPHU) has notified us of a confirmed case of Pertussis (whooping cough) involving a Primary student who attended school during their infectious

period.

Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory infection. While we understand this news may be concerning, we are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community. Below, we have

outlined key information, including symptoms to watch for and school attendance regulations.

Symptoms of Pertussis

Please monitor your child for the following symptoms, particularly over the coming weeks:

  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Low-grade fever
  • Mild, occasional cough (which can progress to severe coughing spells)

If your child develops these symptoms, we strongly encourage you to consult your family doctor immediately.

Exclusion Requirements

Under the Public Health and Wellbeing Regulations 2019 (Schedule 7), the following exclusion rules apply:

  • Confirmed cases of pertussis must be excluded from school for 21 days after theonset of their cough or until they have completed five days of effective antibiotic treatment.
  • Cases with a cough lasting 21 days or more need not be excluded, as they are no longer infectious.
  • Contacts under 7 years of age in the same room as the confirmed case who have not received three effective doses of the pertussis vaccine must be excluded for 14 days after their last exposure to the infectious case or until they have completed five days of antibiotic treatment.

In line with these requirements, any student who attends school displaying symptoms of pertussis will be sent home to protect the wider school community.

Precautions for Families and Staff

Parents of children in classes with confirmed cases are encouraged to:

  • Be vigilant for symptoms of pertussis.
  • Ensure their children’s immunisations are up to date.
  • Seek medical advice if they have concerns about their child’s health or vaccination status.

Reporting New Cases

If you become aware of any additional cases of pertussis in your household or among your child’s close contacts, please notify the school immediately. Additionally, SEPHU advises contacting Communicable Disease Prevention and Control on 1300 651 160.

For your convenience, please see the below fact sheets with more information about pertussis, including its transmission, prevention, and treatment.
