Welcome to Term 4 Primary

'Still other seed fell on good soil' - Mark 4:8

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I do hope you have all had an enjoyable term break with your family and friends. I must say I am very much looking forward to welcoming back our Primary students Tuesday 8 October with their huge smiles and hearing that wonderful laughter that fills our classrooms and playgrounds. Our LCC Primary staff are also excited to see their students complete the year and achieve personal best goals.

Farewell & Welcome

We farewelled Mrs Madeleine Porter at the end of Term 3 as she headed off on Maternity Leave. We are all extremely excited for her and her husband at this special time. We pray God’s special covering over her and her husband and their son as they welcome this little one that God has blessed them with.

A special welcome to Mrs Deborah Woods who will be replacing Mrs Porter over the coming year teaching Year 4PL alongside Mrs Karen Lloyd. Mrs Woods has taught F-12 and is dedicated to a lifelong love of learning and motivating students to grow by building on their existing knowledge and experiences to create an embodied understanding of concepts and skills. Mrs Woods also has an unwavering commitment to child safety and Christian education.

Drop off and Pick up Routine

I encourage all our Primary students to be dropped off at school by 8:45am every morning so as they can be organised and ready for the school day to begin at 9:00am. It is very disruptive when students enter the classroom after 9:00am. Please also note that our staff are off ground supervision duty by 3:45pm. All Primary students should be picked up at 3:15pm and those with Secondary siblings at 3:30pm. Thank you very much for your attention to these two areas.

Canteen Closure

From October 29 – November 25 the College Canteen will be closed due to VCE Exams. Please note that students will NOT be able to put in a lunch order during this time and will need to bring lunch from home.

Scripture Challenge 2024 - Mark 4: 1-9

I am pleased to announce that 253 students have recited for memory the Scripture Challenge passage for 2024 and will be receiving the special Scripture Challenge medal during Primary Presentation Night. I am looking forward to hearing how many students will be receiving an ‘A’ grade for Scripture memorisation too.

Prep & Year 3 Swimming Program

Term 4 Thursday 10 – Thursday 17 October gives our Prep and Year 3 students the opportunity to participate in the LCC 6-day swimming program with instructors at Toby Haenen Swim Centre. Parents, please respond to Consent 2 Go so that your child can participate in the program. Parent helpers may only enter the pool area and change rooms after presenting their WWCC to the Homeroom teacher.

Primary Presentation Night

This event will be upon us before we know it as Term 4 flies by far too quickly. Primary Presentation Night is a compulsory event Thursday 28 November 6:00pm – 8:00pm when we all come together to celebrate a year of student achievements and awards for Scripture Memorisation, Academic Excellence, Diligence, Christian Character and also awards in Music, Art, PE, Drama and Mandarin. Our Primary students will also be presenting some special items praising God at this special time of the year as we celebrate God sending us the best gift, He could possibly give us in His amazing Son – Jesus. A letter will be sent out to you via SEQTA closer to the event for booking purposes.

Jefferson & Vania

Please encourage your child to save some money to bring each week for our sponsor children Jefferson and Vania to put in his/her classroom’s money box. These boxes are collected by our ‘Parents & Friends’ helpers who count and bank the money every Thursday which is then sent on to provide clothing, education and health care for Jefferson and Vania. Unfortunately, our student’s giving has been down approximately $900 on last year’s giving. This is approximately $45 per class. Let us make an effort this term to ensure we have enough to support these two precious children leading up to the end of the 2024.

Food Allergies

A reminder that LCC is not a nut-free school. If a student has an allergy to nuts in a class, the Homeroom

teacher will alert the parents of the students in that class to not send food with nut content. This will ensure the classroom remains nut free. Our staff are trained throughout the year in anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a common medical emergency and a life-threatening acute hypersensitivity reaction which is often fatal due

to its rapid progression to respiratory collapse. Please also make the school nurse aware of any allergies that your child/children may have to keep our information current and accurate. It is also very important to alert College Reception of any contact detail changes.

Primary Activity Day

Friday 29 November (the day after Primary Presentation Night) we will be taking all our Primary students for a special outing to the cinema to watch a Christmas film focusing on the Christmas story. Of course, we will also be providing our students with yummy movie watching treats for a year well done. We are very

proud of the way our students at LCC listen and concentrate in class daily and

have achieved many personal goals throughout 2024.

Singapore Mathematics (Problem Solving) & Digital Technology

We recently had the opportunity to send two of our Primary staff members (Miss Danielle Ng – Head of Lower Primary and Miss Jennifer Holloway – Primary Technology Coordinator) to Singapore on a study tour of three different Singaporean schools to learn from the best Mathematicians in the world on how Mathematics and technology is taught with excellence in Singapore. We look forward to implementing some of these excellent practices and programs at LCC in Primary.

Summer Uniform

All students should be wearing their summer uniform from the beginning Term 4. Please contact your child’s Homeroom teacher if there are any issues in purchasing any part of the uniform. Our Primary students have grown since the beginning of the year so please check the length of the summer uniform dresses (mid-calf length). For some, it is certainly time to adjust the dress hem or put in an order for the next size. It is advisable to recheck the hem length again in January in preparation for the beginning of the 2025 school year. A reminder that Preps - Year 2 boys do not wear a tie with the short sleeve shirt as a part of their summer uniform.

Prep Orientation 2025

Prep Parents please note that Prep students DO NOT come to school Wednesday 20 November as we will be conducting our 2025 Prep Orientation Day.

Homework

Please ensure you provide your child/children with a quiet place to complete homework activities. At LCC we expect all homework to be completed within a set period. Homework tasks help reinforce what students have learned in class and provide an opportunity to practice and apply concepts, enhancing retention. It is a great opportunity for parents to engage with their children’s education and understand what their child/children are learning too. Most importantly it is an opportunity for students to learn to take initiative and responsibility for their own learning, fostering a sense of ownership over their learning journey. College diaries are checked over by the Homeroom teachers daily.

Primary Captain 2025

I am currently going through the selection process for our Primary Year 6 Captains for 2025 in collaboration with the Year 5 teachers. There are a few stages to this process. We provide all our Year 5 students with the opportunity for selection. Students write a letter to the DPP outlining why they would like a captaincy role, why they should be given the role and what they can do to lead Primary in innovative and creative ways moving forward. Of course, Christian Character and overall exemplary behaviour over the students' years at LCC is also taken into account leading up to the final interview stage. There are 14 roles; however, we provide a leadership training program (incursion) for all Year 5 students Monday 25 November as the entire cohort has a responsibility to lead Primary in a positive manner throughout 2025.

Raising Money for our local Keysborough Fire Brigade.

Our local CFA fire brigade plays a crucial role in protecting communities from bushfires and other emergencies. It is a volunteer organisation that constantly supports our special college events by

bringing out the fire truck to our School Fair and Christmas Carols as well as

offering education on fire safety and preparedness for our students.

We are certainly overdue in giving back to this amazing organisation.  Primary and Secondary will be raising money in support of our local community fire brigade. In Primary we will be collecting $2 gold coin donations Tuesday 15 October from students across Primary and providing a small ‘fire red’ lolly strap individually bagged to enjoy during recess.

Cyber Safety

I decided to add the information below, as I did this time last year, because it is a timely reminder and very much worth sharing with you again.

There is always a constant bombardment of damaging material (pornography) and programs that our children are able to access with one click on their personal computers, phones or iPads. We have a very strong internet safety net whilst our students are learning on campus, and we continue to have learning conversations around cyber safety at every age and stage; however, I encourage parents and guardians to continue these conversations at home and be mindful of the content your child/children are accessing during home hours. It is also very important to pray for and with your children about this area and bring God into the center of these conversations.

Yes, we need to put in internet safety measures both at school and at home; however, more importantly we need to communicate and have conversations with our children around this area (please read the

excellent information contained in the two links underlined below; particularly ‘the material hurts our brains’ document), for example:

·      Naked images or videos are never appropriate or right.

·      When we watch porn we sin against God, ourselves, and the people made in God’s image who are on the screen, exposed and vulnerable. If we unintentionally come across porn (or ‘bad images’), we need to get away and tell an adult.

·      Viewing porn will always hurt people. It might not feel like it at the time, but the material hurts our brains, our walk with God, ourselves, a future spouse, and our views of each other.

I have come across a few books that may help you when having these conversations at home. ‘Good Pictures Bad Pictures Junior’ is a picture story book that you can read to your children from ages 3-6. Using gentle, age-appropriate messages, children will learn to Turn, Run & Tell when they are accidentally exposed to inappropriate content. The second edition is for ages 6-11. It includes - "Let's Talk!" discussion questions at the end of each chapter that help children deepen their understanding, so they’ll be even more prepared to reject pornography.

·      All new Tips for Parents and Caregivers section offers practical advice for raising porn-proof children in this digital age.

·      The most up-to-date science provides children with even more powerful arguments against pornography. ‘The Talk’ was written for parents to read with children ages 6 to 10 years old. The study supplies children with foundational truths about sexuality at a level they can understand from a Biblical perspective.

In Primary we provide professional Chess tutors (Kids Unlimited) for any student from Year 1-6 and

from Term 2 onwards our Prep students may also join the program. Students are taught the art and skills of

playing chess. There is still time to sign your child up for chess lessons in Term 4.

The cost is $195 / student / term. There are 8 sessions in a term beginning Wednesday 16 October 2024. Students participating in the Chess Club meet in BEAM 02 1:00pm-1:45pm every Wednesday lunchtime.
